Our comprehensive expertise in forged gear ring technology comes from our more than 50 years of experience, as well as our collaborations with leading mill suppliers and technical universities. As a member of the American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA), we are actively involved in defining the standards for gear-rating calculations, service factors and other design standards. Our girth gears let you get the best from your mill or kiln

We build our fabricated girth gears using forged gear rim material and bodies made in an electro-welded structure. Compared to girth gears with cast base material, the manufacturing process is more sophisticated, as well as more reliable. The uniform and homogenous crystal structure of the forged rims, guarantees identical material properties throughout the entire toothing. Casting defects like hot tears, porosity or shrinkage are excluded – resulting in a stronger and more reliable girth gear.

When supplying ductile cast iron or cast-iron girth gears, we source the raw material from world-leading foundries – working closely with them to ensure the highest quality.

Our cutting-edge production method ensures that our girth gears deliver optimal power and stable operation for your mill or kiln, along with high wear resistance and long operating time. There are five steps to our manufacturing process for fabricated girth gears, including strict quality checks after the final welding and tooth cutting:

To start, high-grade material is rolled and forged to the required ring dimension. Web, rips and junction plates are welded to the forged rim material according to specific qualified processes. Components undergo strict non-destructive tests, followed by post-weld heat treatment. Rough and finish cuttings trim the girth gear to its final dimension. Finally, the tooth geometry, run outs, hardness and many other properties are measured and documented as part of the closing inspection.

The strength of our heavy-duty MAAG® GEAR Girth Gears comes from the strength of our source materials and manufacturing process. We use fabricated steel, forged rings, rolled plates and ductile (nodular) cast iron to ensure the smooth operations for your mill or kiln. The continuous investment in our modern machine shops guarantees state-of-the-art girth gear production, in a wide-range of sizing:

External gears: Maximum diameter: 11,200 mm; Face width: 1,250 mm; Maximum module: 45 by hobbing

Internal gears: Maximum diameter: 6,500 mm; Face width: 400 mm; Maximum module: 25.4

Ball and grinding mills, kilns and dryers are all operated with girth gears – but the girth gear is only one part of the power train. Taking into account the requirements of your application, available space and other individual parameters, our girth gears power your equipment together with pinions and intermediate gear units, lateral gear drives or, in the case of the MAAG® GEAR MAX Drive, with two spur gear drive units.

The classic open gear arrangement includes the main motor, an intermediate gear unit for speed reduction and the pinion, which meshes with the girth gear. If you have higher power needs and limited space, our MAAG® GEAR LGDX lateral gear drive is the preferred solution. The symmetrical casing of our LGDX gear drive gives you high flexibility with positioning – letting you install the drive train at the best location within your mill. By delivering the lateral gear drive together with the girth gear, we ensure that both components match perfectly.

Our girth gears have a key role in meeting the highest power demands in vertical rollers mills. The MAX Drive powers vertical roller mills up to 15,000 kW with two spur gear drive units that mesh with the girth gear under the mill table.

We designed the MAAG® GEAR WA / Temperex Gear Units specifically for driving comminution machinery in minerals processing. These single and multistage gear units effectively transmit torque from electric driver motors to ball, rod, SAG, AG or other types of horizonal mills – giving you dependable power output that works in your heavy-duty application.

With the potential to accommodate the widest possible range of requirements, the broad scope and modular design of the MAAG® GEAR WA / Temperex Gear Unit ensure that you get the crushing solution that perfectly fits your application and unique circumstances. Beyond the wide range of power and size configurations, we can also deliver other designs on request – and our engineers can work with you to guarantee your solution is adapted to the power you require, as well as the speed of your motor and mill.

The standard version of the MAAG® GEAR WA / Temperex works within an ambient temperature range of -4 °C to +40 °C. We can also adapt the design and installation configuration for other ambient temperature ranges, depending on your needs.

Our advanced manufacturing processes ensure the high strength and wear resistance of our MAAG® WA / Temperex gear unit – delivering durability right from the very beginning. Recognising the heavy-duty demands of the mineral processing industry, we make sure our gear units are up to the challenge with the latest developments in heat treatment and teeth machining. The toothed components are produced in-house to the strictest quality standards, using case-hardened and heat-treated steel. This in-house heat treatment gives us complete control over the hardening processes and material properties – and gives you confidence in the long-lasting performance of the MAAG® GEAR WA / Temperex Gear Unit.

The gears in the MAAG® GEAR Temperex range are made of chrome-nickel molybdenum steel and case-hardened and ground on precision tool machines. The modified tooth profiles of the cylindrical helical gears used in our Temerpex Gear Units limit scuffing or scoring – and provide better load distribution.

The complete WA / Temperex mill drive system includes the

motor, gear unit, lubrication system, auxiliary drive, girth gear and pinion.

The standard installation of the MAAG® GEAR WA / Temperex Gear Unit includes a flexible coupling for the high-speed shaft and a toothed coupling for the low-speed shaft, delivering low vibratory loads in the drive train and a relatively wide range for axial and radial displacement. The couplings have no lubricants that need changing – resulting in reliable virtually maintenance-free operation.

All gear wheels in the WA gear unit are made of case-hardened steel, delivering exceptional wear resistance for the teeth, while allowing light, compact gearbox construction. Our in-house heat treatment and precise teeth machining result in optimal tooth contact under load condition and the toothing of the helical stage includes all necessary modifications to ensure smooth meshing.

Depending on the type of load transmission our WA / Temperex Speed Reducers are equipped with spherical or tapered cylindrical roller bearings. In order to minimise maintenance and keep your horizontal mill running smoothly, the bearings in all of our industrial gear units are covered and protected against dust and other possible contaminations, using a combination of lip and labyrinth seals designed for mineral lube oils.

The standard version of our WA / Temperex Gear Unit includes resistance thermometers to monitor the bearings and oil temperature. The instrumentation can be upgraded to a vibration monitoring system as an additional option.

You can upgrade your speed reducer gear unit to allow condition-based preventive maintenance – letting you detect faults at a very early stage and plan future service interventions.

Auxiliary drive for cost-effective maintenance

Fitted behind the electric motor or on the free high-speed shaft end of the gear unit, the auxiliary drive of our MAAG® GEAR WA / Temperex Gear Unit gives you a cost-effective way to perform maintenance. Use the auxiliary drive to simplify build-up welding on your mill or to conveniently re-position the mill during maintenance. Connected to the gearbox or electric motor via an automatic overrunning clutch, the auxiliary drive has a Kirk key interlocking system to prevent it from working simultaneously with the main motor.

The classic open gear arrangement includes the main motor, an intermediate gear unit for speed reduction and the pinion, which meshes with the girth gear. Our standardised product range, in combination with individually-designed girth gears and pinions, allows us to supply a customised power train for your specific application. 

Pinions are available in a solid, on-shaft design, where the gearing is integrated as part of the shaft, or as bored, assembled pinion with shaft. The latter permits a higher-grade material for just the gearing area – letting us optimise the pinion to meet your unique needs. We recommend using self-aligning pinions for high-torque transmission situations. The spherical bearing used between the shaft and the bored pinion allows the toothing to slightly swing – enabling the self-aligning pinions to compensate for minor run-out deviations of your mill or kiln. To guarantee the correct match in hardness between pinion and girth gear, we take into account the meshing assembly and modify the carburising and case-hardening process accordingly. We produce wear-resistant components with the maximum lifespan for both pinions and girth gears.

A lubrication system designed for high-viscosity grease. High-viscosity grease is better for your MAAG® girth gear, but hard on your lube pump. That’s why we’ve developed a new air/grease lubrication system designed to handle high viscosity grease at low velocities – ensuring your girth gear is cared for and your bills stay low.

Lubrication is essential to the working of your gear unit. But not all lubricants are created equal. New, high-viscosity greases are transforming the efficiency and life expectancy of gear parts – but to make the most of these new greases, you need a lube pump that’s up to the task. The MAAG GGL girth gear lubrication system was designed to meet this need. It’s a spray lubrication system that provides the required lubricant quantity in every working condition, saving on lubricant use and therefore reducing costs and environmental impact. It is designed to cope well with high viscosity lubricants, while maintaining the ability to work at low velocities – so you’re only ever using as much grease as you need.

As standard, your girth gear lubrication system includes:

Special Electra pump - a proprietary electrical tri-phase pump for 180 kg tank, including photoelectric distance sensor for minimum-maximum/superminimum grease level in tank Air group for spray valves: with electro valve, pressure switch and filter for pressure regulation and electro valve bypass Grease distribution panel with cover sealing system, ventilated heater with thermostat (15 – 20°C local temperature), and electrical pressure switch (2 signal on/off) Adjustable sprayers. The number of sprayers will be defined according to the application Larger pipe diameter (13 mm internal) Three pre-set phases, exact values to be defined

The sprayers can be adjusted in two directions to ensure the best possible positioning and an even coating of lubrication across the gear. The grease distribution panel includes an electrical pressure switch that enables you to check the exact air working pressure, not just the system pressure.

Using air to propel the grease gives us an easy means of cleaning and emptying the nozzle to prevent build-up and blockages.

The new lubrication pump uses pipes measuring 13 mm internal diameter. This increased opening enables smoother flow of the high-viscosity grease through the pipe.

The Special Electra pump comes equipped with three preset phases, making it easy to switch between start-up, normal running conditions, and emergency settings at the touch of a button.

The MAAG GGL girth gear lubrication system will be designed to fit precisely within the footprint of your existing girth gear for easy, drop-in installation.
