By combining our proven MAAG® planetary gear technology with an innovative electric motor – and removing the bevel stage – we’ve reduced power loss, cut carbon emissions and created a compact drive system that fits in almost any vertical roller mill.

What’s more, we’re also making the most of digital tools to enhance performance and reliability. The IOT-ready CEM Drive can utilise continuous condition monitoring to keep an eye on your drive. With Predicta, our online condition monitoring service, sensors catch the earliest signs of wear and tear, enabling you to react before problems have the chance to develop into events. When you add mySentinel service agreements, you take your maintenance strategy from reactive to proactive – totally eliminating unplanned downtime. Your drive system will never let you down again.

The modular design of our MAAG® CEM Drive system covers a power range from 4000 to 14 000 kW. The integrated motor eliminates the traditional bevel gear stage, which not only makes the compact configuration possible but also reduces the number of rotating parts and bearings in the entire drive train to an absolute minimum. This simplifies installation and service, and of course reduces maintenance costs.

Because we know that your feed characteristics change, we also wanted to make sure your mill could adapt on the fly. The variable frequency converter that powers the integrated motor enables you to quickly and easily optimise your grinding process for maximum results.

Downsizing the footprint, upgrading the power

Downsizing the motor to fit in the available space of a bevel gear stage was the most challenging part of designing our CEM Drive system. The solution is a permanent magnet synchronous motor with single-tooth stator coils and with direct oil cooling for the stator. The use of permanent magnets minimises resistive losses, giving you reduced energy costs. In combination with the frequency converter, the motor delivers constant torque over a wide speed range, with consistently high efficiency. As a result, we’ve managed to up the capacity of the drive system while reducing the footprint. Now, the size of the drive system depends only on the dimensions of the mill table. The compact size gives the flexibility to use the same CEM Drive for multiple mill sizes, allowing fewer spare gears needed for insurance. This makes the MAAG® CEM Drive an obvious choice for retrofit and upgrade projects, and gives you the possibility to do more with less.

The integrated motor includes loss-optimised single-tooth coils and a wear-free self-exciting permanent magnet rotor. The self-excited rotors make external excitation devices unnecessary. Together with the embedded magnets, which concentrate the magnetic fields in the integrated motor, this feature contributes to the CEM Drive’s space-saving and low-maintenance design. Furthermore, the single-tooth coil decreases the axial length of the motor and the total amount of copper also reduces corresponding ohmic losses.

The MAAG® CEM Drive uses direct oil cooling, ensuring the integrated motor is completely separated from the dusty environment around the vertical roller mill. This also means that the gear lubrication oil is not contaminated with other cooling media. As the motor cooling requires the same amount of oil as a bevel gear stage, the size of the lubrication system remains the same – giving you more functionality with identical compact dimensions.

An internal geared coupling transmits the motor torque to the well-proven MAAG® PV gear stage, a double planetary gear stage with torque split. This double planetary configuration has been used successfully in our MAAG® CEM Drive gear unit for many years. It allows for a reduction in both the tooth length and the losses in the second gear stage because it transmits only 75-80% of the torque. The self-centring inner gear ring and sun pinion deliver optimised force flow from the first to the second planetary stage.

The thrust bearing, which supports the mill table of your vertical roller mill, absorbs the static and dynamic loads from the grinding process. Each bearing pad in the MAAG® CEM Drive system is lubricated with high- and low pressure oil and lined with Babbitt metal at the contact surface. The circular, even shape of the casing guarantees an optimal force flow from the mill table into the foundation of your vertical roller mill. Both the gear part and the integrated motor of our MAAG CEM Drive system are equipped with slide bearings. Compared to roller bearings, slide bearings offer higher damping and their unlimited lifespan provides smoother operations and exceptionally high availability for your vertical roller mill.

The MAAG CEM Drive combines proven technology and parts from the IronDrive series with the necessary adjustments to deliver high functionality for vertical roller mills. The standardised design allows you to use the drive unit in all types of mill - optimal for vertical roller mills.

Oil supply unit keeps the gear unit running smoothly

The oil supply units for our vertical roller mill gear units and drive systems includes low-pressure pumps to feed bearings and gears with filtered and cooled lubrication oil. High-pressure pumps supply the oil for the thrust bearing from a separate compartment of the tank filled with chilled and filtered oil from the low-pressure section. Using only clean oil on the high-pressure side allows us to improve the lifespan of pumps and thrust bearing segments.

Modern vertical roller mills in the cement industry require gear units that are up to the challenge of handling higher performance densities and capable of transferring more torque. Current cement producers are also seeking optimum grinding table speeds, which determines the output drive speed of the gear unit. Increasing total gear ratios are the consequences of slower table rotation at the same gear unit input speed. Our MAAG® GEAR WPV with its masterful three-stage gear arrangement achieves all these aims – without compromising on reliability or ease of maintenance.

Innovative gear unit drives high output for your vertical roller mill

Introduced in 2007, the three-stage concept of this bevel-planetary gear unit is FLSmidth’s answer to ever-increasing mill sizes – and our MAAG® GEAR WPV has gone from strength to strength since its first implementation.

Unlike conventional two-stage gear units that require larger bevel wheel dimensions to increase power output, our WPV uses two planetary stages to move gear ratio from the bevel to the planetary stage. This adaptation reduces the size of the bevel wheel, keeping the gear unit compact and delivering the high-power output you need for your vertical roller mill.

The unique double-planetary gear with torque split in the WPV Gear Unit allows the unparalleled performance range upwards of 8,000 kW. The first gear stage passes about 25% of the torque directly to the output flange. With the remaining 75% in the second stage we accomplish the reduction in both tooth length and losses. The four planets in the second stage all use smaller gear wheels than typical gearboxes with two planetary stages in serial arrangement, allowing for high drive output in less space.

Unique design for economical and reliable operation

Easy maintenance and compact design are normally competing interests, but we have managed to combine both in our MAAG® GEAR WPV Gear Unit. The double planetary gear stage provides impressive compactness, together with a loss reduction in relation to the torque split.

The thrust bearing arranged around the first planetary stage supports the mill table and absorbs static and dynamic loads from the grinding process. Each bearing pad is lubricated with high- and low-pressure oil and the pads are lined with Babbitt metal at the contact surface. The bevel and the planetary gears are equipped with slide bearings. These bearings not only provide unlimited lifespan, but also deliver smoother operation because of the higher damping compared to anti-friction bearings – increasing the overall availability of your vertical roller mill.

Large manholes in the lower casing part provide direct access to the bevel gear, letting the WPV gear unit remain in place under the mill during inspections and servicing and reducing any related downtime. Our WPV Gear Unit also simplifies maintenance by allowing you to easily adjust the tooth contact from the outside and quickly removing or adjusting the bevel pinion from outside the gear unit.

Low-maintenance, high-performance connections

The flexible coupling that comes standard with the MAAG® GEAR WPV Gear Unit is almost maintenance free, as it requires no lubrication. It also keeps vibratory loads low in the drive train and allows relatively wide ranges for axial and radial misalignment. Bring it all together with an auxiliary or maintenance drive

A maintenance or auxiliary drive that is tailored to your requirements rounds out the scope of supply for your WPV Gear Unit. The maintenance drive is placed between the motor and gear unit and allows you to rotate the mill table very slowly. This simplifies maintenance work at your vertical roller mill, including replacing lining plates or rebuilding surfaces through welding. The auxiliary unit is mostly used to start the mill when the breakaway torque is too substantial to start the motor directly. The fluid coupling of the auxiliary unit guarantees smooth acceleration and the overrunning clutch automatically disengages the auxiliary drive after the main motor starts.

The oil supply units for our vertical roller mill gear units and drive systems includes low-pressure pumps to feed bearings and toothings with filtered and cooled lubrication oil. If required, high-pressure pumps supply the oil for the thrust bearing from a separated compartment of the tank filled with filtered oil from the low-pressure part. Using only clean oil on the high-pressure side allows us to improve the lifespan of the pumps.

The ring gear of the planetary stage is used directly as part of the casing in the larger series of our MAAG gear units. In this way, we can increase the transmittable torque of the MAAG IronDrive to the maximum.

True strength from our modular drive system for vertical roller mills

The modular concept of the MAAG® GEAR MAX Drive System allow for a compact arrangement without unnecessarily increasing the complexity of monitoring and the connection to the power grid. The two drive units include a vertical asynchronous motor directly flanged to the casing and are each connected to a central girth gear.

When both drives are running, the MAX Drive has a power range from 5,000 to 15,000 kW. You can also operate just one drive, allowing you to continue production at reduced output while performing maintenance on the other drive unit or half of the rollers.


The power behind our MAX Drive comes from two equal gear units that operate the girth gear around the central part on two flanks. These twin gear units transmit power from the electric motors to the grinding table and reduce the motor’s speed to precisely what you require for the grinding process.

In addition to enabling its compact size, the torque split of our three-stage MAAG® GEAR MAX Drive ensures that the total torque to the mill is always equally distributed between the two pinions. The highly flexible couplings used in the MAX Drive automatically equalise any torque imbalances between the two pinions – ensuring equal load distribution between the two gear trains in each drive unit. The coupling also allows you to adjust the correct timing between the output pinions and the central girth gear and guarantees smooth operations through its damping of torque peaks and adaptable stiffness.

The pinions are also self-aligning, providing full tooth contact, even if there is a small run-out failure at the girth gear set-up. The self-alignment is made possible by a crowned toothing between the pinion and pinion shaft.

Mounted on the output disc, the central part of the MAX Drive System supports the grinding table, while a tilting-pad thrust bearing absorbs the static and dynamic grinding forces. With a design adapted from our well-proven MAAG® GEAR WPU and WPV gear units, the thrust bearing for the MAAG® GEAR MAX Drive System consists of thrust pads lined with Babbitt metal. The bearing is hydrostatically and hydrodynamically lubricated by high- and low-pressure oil pumps and the temperature is continuously monitored.

We use the latest machines and manufacturing processes, ensuring all parts are fit-for-use and free from defects. Our girth gears are made from fabricated steel, which produces a homogeneous crystal structure in the base material of the toothing, contributing to higher fatigue- and wear-resistance. Additionally, our in-house heat treatment eliminates internal stresses in the toothings. You can have confidence in the durability and reliability of the MAX Drive System and its components.

The complete MAX Drive System contains:
Two equal drive units, the girth gear unit, the oil unit, the maintenance drive, and a condition monitoring system.

Made up of two or four segments, the girth gear of the MAX Drive is a fabricated design and is manufactured to be more fatigue- and wear-resistant. The ring with the toothing is a high-quality alloy steel that is rolled and bent, while the rib is made out of ordinary carbon steel and welded to the ring.

The compact gearbox of our MAAG® GEAR MAX Drive System is powered by a vertical electric motor, adapted from a standard design to specifically fit this application. It is a squirrel cage asynchronous motor mounted directly on top of the gear casing, removing the need for any complicated onsite alignment.

In order to protect the girth gear from dust, we developed a new sealing concept that decouples the drives from the central part. A labyrinth seal, brush and dust protection shield are installed between the mill table and girth gear guard, along with rubber sealing to protect the central part and gear unit. These safeguards allow the drive system to run smoothly and decrease servicing.

The maintenance drive is integrated in one of the gear trains and allows you to rotate the mill table very slowly. This simplifies maintenance work at your vertical roller mill, including replacing lining plates or rebuilding surfaces through welding.

Our compact MAAG® GEAR WPU Bevel and Planetary Gearbox is your ticket to reliable power transmission in your vertical roller mill. With two series to suit your requirements, the MAAG® GEAR WPU Two-Stage Gear Unit is suitable for a wide-range of mills and arrangements. The large series accommodates power ranges from approximately 1,300 to 5,500 kW, while the small series is perfect for coal mills with a power ranges up to 1,500 kW.

Gear unit for all kinds of vertical roller mills – even coal mills

We developed the small series of MAAG® GEAR WPU Gear Units specifically for coal mills in cement, mineral and thermal power plants. The unique requirements of coal mills demand that the coal grinding system considers the heat sources used to dry raw coal, as well as the fire and explosion hazards of coal dust. To meet these demands, the entire grinding plant must be shock-resistant and have explosion relief valves.

If our MAAG® GEAR WPU Gearbox will be used in thermal power plant applications, we will follow the latest ATEX standards. We can also ensure that all electrical equipment installed on the WPU gear unit complies with anti-explosive requirements.

Our WPU Gear Units combine proven technology for driving vertical roller mills with the necessary adjustments to deliver high functionality for coal mills in cement plants and other applications. The standardised design of the WPU Gear Unit allows you to use it in many different types of mills and plant arrangements, while benefiting from the improvements to vibration dampening and ability to handle variable load operation.

Our conventional two-stage gear unit, the MAAG® GEAR WPU, fits perfectly in the classic vertical roller mill drive arrangement, where a horizontally-oriented electrical motor provides the drive power and rotary motion. The first reduction stage in the gear unit, the bevel stage, redirects the horizontal rotation into the vertical axes of the mill and is followed by a planetary gear stage, according to your torque and ratio requirements.

We use the ring gear of the planetary stage directly as part of the casing in the larger series of our MAAG® GEAR gear units. This minimises the ratio in the bevel gear stage, increasing the transmittable torque to a maximum.

The profile and longitudinal modifications of the toothed flanks of the sun pinion fully compensate for deformations of the pinions, wheels and gears while under load. This method guarantees optimum tooth flank contact and combines with the high toothing quality in the MAAG® GEAR WPU to deliver efficient power output and smooth operation – and ensure gear unit longevity.

The thrust bearing, which supports the mill table of your vertical roller mill, absorbs the static and dynamic loads from the grinding process. Each bearing pad is lubricated with low-pressure oil and the pads are lined with Babbitt metal at the contact surface. Subject to your needs for the grinding process, our WPU Gear Units also include high-pressure lubrication for hydrostatic table support. Depending the size and application, we can supply both gear stages with slide bearings or roller bearings.

The gear casing for the MAAG® GEAR WPU Gearbox is robust welded or cast steel. Additionally, the casing’s even, circular shape guarantees an optimal force flow from the mill table into the foundation of your vertical roller mill.

While the lubrication system and coupling are must-haves for operating the gear unit, we can supply auxiliary or maintenance drives according your plant arrangement and maintenance philosophy. Our comprehensive online monitoring system ensures you get the most out of your vertical roller mill – and lets you efficiently plan maintenance.

Lubrication keeps the gear unit running smoothly

The oil supply units for our MAAG® GEAR WPU Gear Unit include low-pressure pumps that supply filtered and cooled lubrication oil to the bearings and toothings. If required, high-pressure pumps deliver oil to the thrust bearing from a separate compartment of the tank, using filtered oil from the low-pressure section. Using only clean oil on the high-pressure side improves the lifespan of the pumps and decreases the frequency of required maintenance.

The flexible coupling that comes standard with the WPU Gear Unit is almost maintenance free, as it requires no lubrication changes. It also has low vibratory loads in the drive train and relatively wide ranges for axial and radial misalignment. These features combine to give you reliable function, with low operating costs.

A maintenance or auxiliary drive that is tailored to your requirements rounds out the scope of supply for your WPU gear unit. The maintenance drive is placed between the motor and gear unit and allows you to rotate the mill table very slowly. This simplifies maintenance work at your vertical roller mill, including replacing lining plates or rebuilding surfaces through welding.

The auxiliary unit is mostly used to start the mill when the breakaway torque is too substantial to start the motor directly. The fluid coupling of the auxiliary unit guarantees smooth acceleration and the overrunning clutch automatically disengages the auxiliary drive after the main motor starts.
